The Polar Bear Classic Beach Volleyball Tournament is a staple to the culture of beach volleyball in San Diego. The tournament started in 1986 by Rande Turner as a Men’s Open. It has evolved into a traditional family holiday event with Men’s, Women’s, Father/Son, Mother/Daughter and now Junior’s divisions. People dress up, wear their Santa hats and uggs, and favorite collectors Polar Bear Sweatshirt. This annual event exists rain or shine. In San Diego it’s mostly beautiful weather but there have been some memorable years of rain and cyclones….but fun as can be. Join us each second Saturday in December as we celebrate the sport of beach volleyball in South Mission Beach, a haven for the sport and support our sport, our annual Starlings Club charity and the Maintenance of the South Mission Beach Sports Courts.
Laura Hendrickson, a veteran volleyball player, has supported this event since 1994. She has not only participated as a player, but initiated San Diego Beach Improvement Group to help raise money for the maintenance of the courts at South Mission Beach where the tournament is held. In 2007, she began creating the designs for the collector sweatshirts. Proceeds of the event go to Starlings and the maintenance of the beach volleyball courts.
